The FSMA Produce Safety Rule §112.22(c) requires “at least one supervisor or responsible party from the farm to successfully complete food safety training at least equivalent to that received under the standardized curriculum recognized as adequate by the Food and Drug Administration”. The PSA Grower Training Course is one way for growers to meet this requirement.
The PSA Grower Training curriculum has been specifically designed to provide a foundation of Good Agricultural Practices knowledge that includes emphasis on co-management of food safety and environmental management goals, while outlining the requirements in the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule. Though not all fruit and vegetable farms will be subject to the FSMA Produce Safety Rule, the farming environment naturally has many microbial risks that could impact produce safety, so every grower needs to know how to identify and reduce risks. In addition, buyer demand for food safety practices and the first ever regulation of fresh produce outlined in the FSMA Produce Safety Rule, make knowledge about produce safety important to overall farm viability.
